La notion d’information dans les structures narratives de Mark Lombardi (1994-2000) : une esthétique du détournement cybernétique

Cette thèse se propose de renseigner les rapports entre le travail d’investigation politico-artistique de Mark Lombardi de la fin des années 90 avec les notions issues de la première cybernétique. À travers la démarche de l’artiste, de références historiques, et des parallèles théoriques et critiques opérés, la thèse produit un discours à rebours des écrits faisant autorité sur le sujet jusque là. La thèse suit une démarche que l’on pourrait appeler archéo-critique : il s’agit pour nous de remonter le fil des œuvres de l’artiste, de ses références, pour se situer en dehors des conclusions attendues et dominantes sur son travail. Après un travail d’articulation des enjeux entre œuvre et document, s’en suit une critique des rapprochements avec l’art conceptuel, pour continuer sur l’héritage historique plus lointain. En parallèle de cette approche plus historique, la notion d’information est introduite et critiquée pour montrer le lien plastique qui s’opère dans l’œuvre : information et réification sont entrelacés dans la représentation diagrammatique de l’artiste.

This writing investigates relations between the political / artistical investigation of Mark Lombardi, at the end of the 90s, with notions produced by the first cybernetic movement of 1947. Throughout an exploration of the artist’s creative process, through historical references, and theoretical and critical parallels, this thesis gives a renewed and contradictory perspective on the narrative structures, and the writings having authority on the subject. This research follows a path that one could call archeo-critical : what mattered was to climb up the thread of the artistic process and biography, of the artistic references, to locate our discourse outside of the generic conclusions made on the subject matter. After an articulation of problematics between art and document, follows a critique of relations to conceptual art, to pursue on a more distant historical heritage. In parallel of this more historical approach, the notion of information is introduced and criticised to show the concrete and plastic link operating in the work : information and reification are intertwined in the diagrammatic representation of the artist.
