Foshan, un modèle chinois de la sous-métropolisation

Située dans le "voisinage métropolitain" de Canton, Foshan ne cesse de forger ses formes singulières d’urbanité. Cette thèse s’applique à analyser les figures et les images représentatives de l’urbanité de Foshan en fonction des trois périodes marquées par ses différents modes de relation avec Canton : 1) la période 1840-1925 où Foshan articule la capitale Canton aux localités de l’aval des fleuves Xijiang et Beijiang ; 2) la période 1925-2002 marquée par le développement industriel moderne de Foshan à l’ombre de Canton, notamment lors de son arrimage spatial et économique à Canton à partir de 1978 ; 3) la période 2002-2012 d’intégration à la grande « Guang-Fo City », Foshan émerge alors en sous-métropole. À travers ces analyses, se construit l’approche spécifique d’un modèle chinois de sous-métropolisation à partir de villes secondaires. S’ouvre aussi une perspective de recherche par l’extrapolation de ce modèle au delta de la rivière des Perles, c’est-à-dire aux aires métropolitaines de Hongkong-Shenzhen et de Macao-Zhuhai.

Situated within the Guangzhou metropolitan area, Foshan persists in forging unique forms of urbanity. This thesis analyzes representative figures and images of the urbanity of Foshan, accross three eras distinguished by the city’s shifting relationship with Guangzhou: 1) 1840-1925, during which Foshan linked the capital Guangzhou to settlements of the lower Xijiang and Beijiang Rivers; 2) 1925-2002, era of its modern industrial development in the shadow of Guangzhou, in particular its increasing territorial and economic "attachment" to Guangzhou since 1978; and 3) 2002 -2012, during which Foshan is being integrated into "Guang-Fo City", and is emerging as sub-metropolis. The specifics of this Chinese model of sub-metropolization are elaborated from the unique observation angle of secondary city. Furthermore, a research perspective is established by the extrapolation of this model to the Pearl River Delta, particularly to the metropolitan areas of Hong Kong-Shenzhen and Macao-Zhuhai.
